Rumor has it that Steven Spielberg initially came up with the story for The Goonies when he was beginning to direct 1985’s The Color Purple. The question that started this rather surprising thought process was, ironically, a simple one: What kind of wild adventures do kids get into on rainy days? Well, according to him, venturing underground in search of One Eyed Willy’s treasure, carefully treading through many different traps set by the legendary pirate and also avoiding a very intimidating crime family (who are shaped like a bunch of oversized brutes).
