For a director as endlessly celebrated as Francis Ford Coppola, choosing one movie as his masterpiece is a daunting prospect. Obviously, The Godfather still stands as one of the defining works of the New Hollywood movement, and Part II arguably holds together as a better film, even if its not as iconic. However, one could make just as convincing an argument that Apocalypse Now is his opus in that it uses the template of a war film to dive into the human psyche and uncover the darkness within. And still others think The Conversation, sandwiched between the first two Godfather installments, remains unfairly overlooked, and for good reason its excellent.
