“Exposing the truth had a price – it’s called exile.” Magnolia Pictures has revealed the official trailer for the acclaimed documentary film Ernest Cole: Lost and Found, telling the profoundly moving life story of the extraordinary talented photographer Ernest Cole. Most of you may not recognize his name at first, but after watching this film you’ll never be able to forget him or his work. I am so impressed by his shots. Ernest Cole – one of the very first Black freelance photographers in South Africa – exposes the horror of Apartheid through photographs, which resulted in him fleeing to the United States in 1996, where he lived in exile for the rest of his life. Years after his death, more than 60,000 of his 35mm film negatives were discovered in a bank vault in Stockholm, Sweden in 2017. Most considered these forever lost, especially the thousands of pictures Cole shot in the U.S. Telling his own story through his writings, the recollections of those closest to him, and the lens of his uncompromising work, the film is a reintroduction of a pivotal Black artist to a new generation.
