Film Distribution Services: A Complete Guide for Indie Filmmakers

The distribution landscape has never been more accessible — or more confusing. Here's a clear breakdown of your options, from aggregators to direct platform deals.

Independent film distribution has been transformed by streaming. A film that would have struggled to find a theatrical distributor a decade ago can now reach audiences on dozens of platforms worldwide. But more options also means more decisions — and more ways to leave money and exposure on the table.

**Aggregators** are companies that handle the technical delivery of your film to streaming platforms on your behalf. They charge either an upfront fee per platform or a percentage of revenue. The major aggregators include Distribber (now part of Filmhub), BitMax, and Quiver Digital. Aggregators are useful when you want to place your film on specific platforms without signing a full distribution deal. The tradeoff is that you're responsible for your own marketing and audience development.

**Filmhub** has emerged as the most filmmaker-friendly distribution marketplace. Their non-exclusive, revenue-share model means no upfront fees — they earn when you earn. Their network includes 100+ streaming channels, and their dashboard provides transparent reporting on streams and revenue. For most indie filmmakers, Filmhub is the logical starting point for AVOD and SVOD placement.

**Direct platform deals** are available to filmmakers with strong content and the right relationships. Tubi, Plex, and Peacock all accept direct submissions from filmmakers and production companies. The advantage is a higher revenue share and sometimes a minimum guarantee. The disadvantage is that each platform has its own submission process, technical requirements, and review timeline.

**Traditional distributors** — companies that acquire rights and handle all aspects of distribution — still exist and still make sense for certain films. If your film has strong festival credentials, a recognisable cast, or a subject matter with broad commercial appeal, a traditional distributor can provide marketing resources and platform relationships that an independent filmmaker can't replicate. The tradeoff is rights — most traditional deals ask for multi-year exclusivity and a significant revenue share.

**ClydeVision Films** operates as a hybrid: we handle technical delivery, platform relationships, and marketing strategy while you retain 100% of your rights. We work with filmmakers at every stage — from films that are distribution-ready to projects still in post-production that need a delivery roadmap. If you're not sure which distribution path is right for your film, our intake process starts with a strategy conversation, not a contract.
